What is Five-Element Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a 5,000-year-old system of Holistic Medicine that treats the root of illness in the body, mind, and spirit. Specific energy pathways known as ‘meridians’ are addressed and the body is gently nudged to heal itself. Through stimulation of the nervous and immune systems, clients are brought back into balance and are able to use the innate healing wisdom of the body to address a variety of health issues.
How does acupuncture work?
Acupuncture works by stimulating the nervous system to increase the activity of pain-killing endorphins and immune system cells at specific points on the body. Brain chemistry and the release of neurotransmitters are altered, gently nudging the body to heal itself.
Our acupuncturist’s approach is whole-person based. The body and mind are all connected, and each piece is of vital importance to the healing process.
Your acupuncturist will design a specific treatment plan that addresses your unique needs. Our acupuncturists also offer coaching based on their observations and experience.
What conditions can acupuncture treat?
The NIH (National Institutes of Health) recognizes acupuncture in treating the following conditions: Generalized Pain, Asthma, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Lower Back Pain, Osteoporosis, Fibromyalgia, Tennis Elbow, Headaches, Menstrual Cramps, Stroke Rehabilitation, Addictions, Post-Operative and Chemotherapy Nausea/Vomiting, and Post-Operative Dental Pain.
Acupuncture has also been proven to treat: Anxiety, Depression, Mood Swings, Anger, Insomnia, Neck Pain, Shoulder Pain, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Pre-Menstrual Syndrome, Menstruation Difficulties, Grief/Sadness, Digestive Disorders, Eating Disorders, Urinary Disorders, Sexual Dysfunction, Infertility, the Common Cold, and many other ailments.
Acupuncture also serves as preventative medicine.
What should I expect from my first visit?
During your first acupuncture visit at Ojas, you will be given a thirty-minute medical and social history interview followed by a one-hour treatment.
How often do I need to come back?
For optimal healing, you can expect to visit once a week for the first six to eight weeks. After that period, we will re-assess your symptoms and determine how often you should receive future treatment. Treatments will gradually be spread out to once every two weeks, then once every three weeks, and so on.
How long until I see results?
Typically speaking, you will see results after the first treatment. A good rule of thumb for chronic conditions is that the condition will take as many weeks to clear as the number of months it has existed. For example, if you have had Irritable Bowel Syndrome for seven months, it generally takes seven weeks of treatment to clear the symptoms.
Will it hurt? Are the needles sterile?
In most cases you will experience some form of sensation when needles are inserted. The sensation often feels like tingling or pressure, and dissipates as soon as the needle is adjusted. Ojas’s acupuncturists understand the value of careful and gentle needle insertion, and take care ensuring that the needles are comfortable once they reach the acupuncture point. All needles are sterile, used only once for only one patient, and are disposed of in a sealed container.
