Mat or Equipment Pilates?

Which style of Pilates is right for you?

Mat and equipment Pilates classes provide similar benefits but are quite different in many ways.

This brief description of the differences between the two types of practices can help you choose the appropriate class. If you have more questions, please contact any front desk wellness coordinator. We can discuss your goals and options and will gladly give you further guidance. You can also read more on the mat or equipment specific pages of our site.

Mat Pilates

  • Takes place in a group with exercises performed on a mat
  • Creates resistance using your own body weight and light equipment
  • Is done on a drop-in basis, so you can come and go as you like
  • Can be done at home or while traveling, in any space in which you can lay a mat
  • Is also available to first-time students who enter a class with a two-class introductory card

Equipment Pilates

  • Is semi-private with a maximum size of three people to provide personal attention
  • Is offered in 10-week sessions

  • May include work on the Reformer, Tower, Cadillac, Wunda Chair, or Barrel
  • Creates additional resistance with pulleys and springs to provide the most efficient and effective Pilates workout
  • Is designed to provide optimal assistance and support, helpful for those with limited range of movement or injuries
  • Is available to first-time or beginning students who begin with a 60-minute private lesson at a discounted rate of only $60. After this introductory session, you can enter a class setting. This private session allows you to understand the fundamentals of the equipment before joining a class.
